Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Cusco and City Tour
Upon arrival at Cusco Airport, one of our Peruvian Great Journeys representatives will welcome you and take you to your selected hotel. You’ll have time to acclimate to the altitude while enjoying a comforting coca tea. In the afternoon, we’ll start the City Tour, exploring Qoricancha or Temple of the Sun, followed by the Inca fortresses of Sacsayhuamán, Qenqo, Tambomachay, and Pucapucara.
Day 2: Maras and Moray – Free Afternoon in Cusco
The day begins with a visit to Moray, an Inca agricultural complex known for its circular terraces. Then, we’ll head to the Maras Salt Mines, a collection of over 3,000 salt ponds exploited since pre-Inca times. After the tour, we return to Cusco, and you’ll have the afternoon free to stroll, shop for crafts, or enjoy the local cuisine.
Day 3: Sacred Valley – Journey to Aguas Calientes
We’ll head to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Our first stop is the Taray viewpoint, offering a spectacular view of the valley. Next, we’ll explore the archaeological complex of Pisac and its colorful artisan market. We’ll have a buffet lunch in Urubamba. In the afternoon, we visit Ollantaytambo, one of the last living Inca towns. Finally, we board the train to Aguas Calientes for an overnight stay.
Day 4: Machu Picchu Exploration – Return to Cusco
After breakfast, we take a bus up to the Machu Picchu citadel, one of the world’s most treasured sites. We’ll enjoy a guided tour through its main sectors: the Temple of the Sun, Intihuatana, the Sacred Plaza, among others. Afterwards, you’ll have free time for photos and to absorb the site’s energy. We then return to Aguas Calientes to catch the train back to Ollantaytambo, followed by a bus to Cusco.
Day 5: Hike to Humantay Lake
We depart to Soraypampa, the starting point of the hike to the beautiful Humantay Lake. This natural jewel, located at over 4,200 meters above sea level, dazzles with its turquoise waters and stunning Andean scenery. A truly immersive experience in nature.
Day 6: Climb to Rainbow Mountain
Early in the morning, we head to Pitumarca, where the ascent to the famous Rainbow Mountain or Vinicunca begins. Along the way, we’ll see vicuñas, alpacas, and snowcapped peaks. At the summit, we’re rewarded with a multicolored panorama that feels like a dream.
Day 7: Farewell and Departure
After breakfast, depending on your flight schedule, you’ll be transferred to Cusco Airport. Thus ends a magical week full of adventures and discoveries in the Andes.
